Blog: Is your safe...safe?

Is your safe…safe? Many people are under the mistaken impression that their “valuables” (guns, cash, jewelry, etc.) won’t be stolen because they keep them in safe. This couldn’t be further from the truth. First of all, thieves don’t have to “crack” the combination to get to your stuff. Nor do they have to use tools to cut or burn their way into it. All they have to do is remove your safe and take it to a place where they can focus on accessing it for as long as it takes, without fear of being caught. You need to have your safe secured (bolted) to either the floor (preferable) or the wall. Many people believe if their safe is large enough, it is too heavy to take. This is not true.

As a security professional for 20+ years, one of my previous job positions was to test security systems and physical security devices/designs. One of those tests involved stealing a 1200 lb safe, which was accomplished in under 3 minutes. Most people assume it would take 20-30 minutes to take that safe, because that is how long it took the professional delivery men to put it in place. However, when the thieves use a simple commercial dolly and don’t care whatsoever about scratching or breaking the walls, doorframes, etc., it is much quicker. We drove up in a rented commercial truck, kicked in the front door, picked up the safe and rolled it through the house and into the truck. From the time we pulled in until we left the driveway was less than 3 minutes.

If you have a monitored alarm system (and you should), you are better off because at least someone knows the intrusion alarm has been activated, however, the average response time for San Antonio Police Department is 7 minutes. Unless a police unit happens to be right next to your home, the thieves will probably be gone, with your safe, before the police arrive. However, if you have it properly secured to the floor, they will have to leave without it. Call us; we can help. The threat is real…is your security?
